Minimalist Wallpaper Guide | Inkscape by ncoll36 Minimalist Wallpaper Guide | Inkscape by ncoll36
There has been a few times now where people have asked me how I make my wallpapers, I've just given them the tutorial I used to learn to make them.
Since then I have learnt a lot more and figured out a bunch of tricks a long the way, so here it is, A Minimalist Wallpaper Guide for Inkscape.

I used a design similar to what DashingHero made.
His tutorial for Illustrator can be found HERE.

Please give me your opinions on this tutorial/guide, I will be happy to answer any questions you have as well!

Notes:
* Inkscape v0.91 - Download
* If some tools are missing from the toolbox on the left, do the following:

Edit > Preferences > Interface > Then set Toolbox icon size to "Small"

* I use a theme, to view tool differences CLICK HERE!

Looks awesome. One thing I'd suggest doing is adding the source image in the description of that post.

You've mentioned that you do a different method recently. What do you do differently now?

Yeah, so essentially I no longer use division tool. Instead I manually add nodes, disconnect them and break apart path. I know it sounds more complex, but it allows me to be more precise.

Many thanks for taking the time and effort to make this tutorial.  I first downloaded Inkscape last week and took a whole night to teach myself how to use and navigate it.  Menu hunting was a pain, but I Googled up the keyboard shortcuts :)

I made a Johan Liebert minimalist wallpaper as my first Inkscape creation.  However, I would like to advance to the more complex stuff like the kind of vector art you make, and then move on to making OCs for a webcomic I plan on making this summer.

Do you have any more tips & tricks I can add to my arsenal for Inkscape?

Some things I have done to improve my efficiency is customise my Inkscape interface, by that I mean I removed all the unnecessary open windows and bars. You can see that in my screenshot. I have also customised the keyboard shortcuts, so my most used keys are WASD and surrounding keys (gamer here so these keys are most familiar when using both keyboard and mouse at the same time).

Alongside this, I have also created keyboard macros for some certain tasks because I couldn't change all the shortcuts. My keyboard also as separate macro keys in easy to access locations. So I have added stuff like delete, group, merge, split, and a couple others to keyboard macros.

As for more complex stuff, for my vectors I do the exact same process as everything else, but you are essentially just adding more paths to the image. I have slightly changed my process from this tutorial, but those are little tricks I've just picked up as I play around with stuff. That generally happens over time when you discover new stuff.

OCs are a completely different story since you will be creating them from scratch and not tracing over an existing image. I haven't had any experience doing this, so I can't really help there.

Some general tips I can't stress enough, the less nodes you are, the smoother your image will look. So try finding the best places to put your nodes to create the curve needed.

Ah yes, I see what you mean by that last part.  I've been tracing paths for quite some time now, and I'm glad to hear that the processes haven't changed since I started.  As for the OCs, I have just downloaded DesignDoll so I can trace over an existing image to my benefit.  After all, I lack the talent to create things from scratch, especially humanoid shapes, so I might as well create 3D models and translate them to 2D using Inkscape tracing.

Lastly, I think your method of customizing keyboard macros to gamer-style functions is ingenious.  I shall do that on my own time.  Thank you.

That's a good idea, creating your own models from existing things such as DesignDoll. I'm assuming your webcomic will be more of a comedic approach over something story driven, if so I think doing this method will definitely work.

Oh yeah, most definitely comedic.  Just a series of random dark-comedy sketches I imagine from time to time, but with a central theme and recurring characters to fulfill certain archetypes that I like to poke fun at.

Tutorials take a long time to make. How I showed you to do things in this tutorial I do slightly differently now myself.
What would you like to see in more tutorials anyhow?

I might try to use this as a base guide to do more detailed versions, just boils down to a lot of layers and a lot of time as far as I can tell lol

Yes, this is essentially just the basics on how to make these.
As you learn the program you will figure out your own way of doing things which are easier for you.
Since I made this, I do some things slightly different myself.
